‘NISE Innovator’ award for Winchester consultant.
A consultant from Winchester and Eastleigh NHS Trust has been awarded joint first prize in the NHS Innovations South East ‘NISE Innovator of the Quarter’ competition. Mr Charles Cole has developed an interactive information system for use by patients (especially young patients) and relatives whilst waiting for orthodontic treatment. The new system is currently being trialled in Bristol and Oxford and is already attracting praise from patient’s groups.
Commenting on today’s award, Barbara North, Chairman of the Winchester and Eastleigh Trust, said "Charles has used modern LCD screen-based technology to present important health information to patients in a way that is interesting, accessible and interactive. Sited in the orthodontic waiting area, the system is a powerful health promotion tool that will strengthen our efforts to tackle such problems as obesity and smoking. I believe Charles’ approach will eventually prove suitable for ‘roll out’ across the Trust; this is great foresight from a committed clinician".
Adding his congratulations to Mr Cole, Dr John Stedman, the Chief Executive of NHS Innovations South East, said he was “delighted by this latest example of innovation within the health service. There is now a very real innovation culture within the NHS in this region.” Adding that “we at NISE are there to provide professional support for front-line NHS staff whose commitment and creativity have the potential to improve patient care and treatment.” He concluded “At NISE, we believe it is good to offer such individuals some personal recognition for their efforts, in the hope that their example will encourage other potential innovators to come forward with their ideas.”
